When Worlds Collide: Bridging Gospel, Church and Culture -- September 22-23, 2010 -- The Theology of Youth Ministry Conference is sponsored by Youthworks College and has been held every two years since 2006. The conference continues the vision of the Theology of Youth Ministry conferences held at Ridley College Melbourne from 1998-2004. Youthworks College is an activity of Anglican Youthworks, the children’s and youth ministry arm of the Anglican Church in the Diocese of Sydney.
The conference is held over two days (Thursday-Friday, September 22-23, 2010). Five papers are presented, having been distributed to participants ahead of time. Each session runs for an hour and fifteen minutes with a presentation from the speaker (0:20), a response (0:10), discussion in small groups (0:15) and plenary (0:30). The final plenary session aims to gather the key thoughts that have arisen over the five sessions with the aim of developing a summary statement of the mind of the conference. The final session also includes a significant time for prayer.
Proposed presenters and topics include:
Rev. Dr Jack Gabig, ‘Exceeding Human Culture: A Christology that Transcends’.
Dr. Paul McQuillan, drawing on research conducted by the Brisbane Catholic
Education (BCE) conducted research in conjunction with the Australian Centre
for Educational Research (ACER), Dr McQuillan’s proposal is to consider the
disconnect between faith and values of church and school.
Mr. Jim French, Vice Principal, Youthworks College, will present material
from a Master of Arts (Theology) thesis on emerging adulthood.
Conference Audience:
The conference attracts around 140 delegates from across Australia, mostly from Sydney. The majority are youth ministry practitioners who have been studied theology at degree level. They come largely from conservative evangelical churches.
